Old House Blues

By Luanne Crosby

I bought it cuz I loved it, not that it was smart

Had to make my head stop talking so I could hear my heart

The fireplace, the back stairs, the beauty of its bones

How could I say no when I knew I’d found my home?

The first year was the sweetest, I had so many dreams

That winter by the fireside gave me time to scheme

That awful saggy ceiling was easy to ignore

I could only see the beauty, but that was all before

I got this Old House Blues

This Old House Blues

Anyone who owns one, no matter how enthused

Anyone who has, has had this Old House Blues

Dangerous brick and mortar means the fireplace is gone

And its cozy gas replacement we haven’t settled on

We have artwork hung on sheetrock, to ward off the despair

Of dollars spent that only go below the cellar stairs

The outside wall is listing left – something’s wrong it seems

So we open up the ceiling, see that someone cut the beam

What were those morons thinking, when they went to run that pipe

As we buy lally columns I’m trying not to gripe

I got this Old House Blues

This Old House Blues

Anyone who owns one, might deny and disabuse

But they can’t fool me, they’ve got this Old House Blues

It became quite clear, that it was time to insulate

Cuz I hate being cold, and our carbon footprint wasn’t great

Melding old construction with new technology

Makes you feel you’re in the field of archeology

If money was no object, I’d not be sharing space with tools

I’d be in the finished basement swimming in our endless pool

Instead we’re fighting ice dams, but I’m sure there’ll be a day

We own a great historic home and laugh about the way

We had this Old House Blues

This Old House Blues

Anyone who owns one always pays his dues

Anyone whose had one’s had this Old House Blues.

I got this Old House Blues

This Old House Blues

Anyone who owns one, no matter how enthused

Anyone who has, has had this Old House Blues
